Chosen for Christ – A Book Review

First, I would like to thank Moody Publishers for providing me a complimentary copy of this book.  This has in no way influenced my review. I will only share books that I believe will interest and benefit you. This is such a book, and this is my honest review of it.

Chosen. We all want to feel chosen, special, treasured, precious, loved and accepted. Most of us go through a season of feeling that void in our hearts that only Jesus can fill. Yet, even after coming to Jesus, we can get so wrapped up in our life-plan that we forget about Him. In doing so, we miss the life He created us to live. So, what are we here for? Why did God choose us? How can we step into the life we’ve been missing by living as God’s chosen people? Those are some of the questions Heather Holleman addresses on her latest book: Chosen for Christ.

In it, Heather tackles our yearning for being chosen and points us to the Person who is at the center of it all: Jesus. With great vulnerability, she will let you into her own experience of feeling rejected, not chosen, and how God showed her what being chosen is all about.

As she studied the verb chose, she found that God gives us seven invitations as His chosen people. Each one calls us to reflect the heart of God as we live a life that exalts Him and fulfills His purposes.

More than telling about the seven invitations, the book offers practical ways to live those out. I was not only edified but also encouraged by Heather’s experiences and the way she carries herself as a child of God. She also shares examples of what responding to the invitations look like, inspiring you to get out of your comfort zone.

I loved her use of imagery as well as her candid stories.  Let me tell you: you will never see perfume, pumpkins, and pasta in the same way after reading this book! You can almost hear the excitement on her voice when she tells you about something she learned or about sharing Jesus with others. You can also get her sense of humor throughout the book. I actually laughed out loud a couple of times while reading, so this book engages you on different levels.

It is easy to read but also “juicy” enough that you’ll find yourself highlighting snippets of wisdom and making notes on the margins. Each chapter wraps up with a section called “Your Next Step,” which includes thought-provoking questions, as well as opportunities for self-examination. Packed with biblical truth and real-life experiences, this is a mind-renewing and spirit-refreshing read!

One of my mind-renewing moments is the realization that we are chosen for a Person, not a plan. If our plans fall apart, we can keep it together because our focus is on Jesus. As Heather says: “Embracing our identity as chosen for Someone – belonging to Him, existing entirely for His purposes – rips us from a world of self-centeredness.”

Besides the moments of laughter, the spirit-refreshing moment that stands out the most to me is what I experienced while reading Chapter 3. It had a profound impact on me, as it prepared my heart to receive God’s love afresh. I had my season of not feeling chosen, therefore doubting God really loved me. The thought can come uninvited when my mind is not guarded with God’s truth. As Heather addresses those moments of feelings-over-truth, she reminds the reader that nothing can separate us from the love of God, citing Romans 8:38-39.

As I was reading this verse, I tuned into the music playing on the background. The song playing on the radio was Lincoln Brewster’s “No One Like Our God.” The bridge of the song is essentially Romans 8:38-39. I tuned into it at the exact moment I was reading those verses on the book! It was as if the book and the radio were signing in unison! Tears flooded my eyes as I felt God Himself affirming His love for me.

Not only was it an affirmation of His love, but a confirmation of His sovereignty and complete control over the events in my life, which is also addressed in the book. Only God can orchestrate my reading this book while listening to that song at that particular time!

God is in the details of our lives. He cares for each one of His children, He calls us by name, and has chosen us to live for Him. I now invite you to read Chosen for Christ and accept God’s invitations to the abundant life He created you for!

For His Glory,
